Things to Know Before Consulting Your Radiation Detector Manufacturer

Many people come in touch with radiation on an everyday basis. A lot of people work in environments where radioactive elements are a regular thing. They are equipped to handle these situations. It is crucial for them to be aware of the dangerous levels and take necessary precautions. The way to measure those levels is by using different types of radiation detectors. You have to learn more about how these things work so that you will be able to find just the right one.

There are numerous options for detectors. First, you would have to choose your manufacturer. Then, you could talk to them and explain what exactly you need. You would have to explain what kind of radiation you want to measure. There are different types of waves. The radiation can be measured in the environment, on the surface of objects and exposure received by people. Most of the detectors can be worn on the body, carried in hand or backpack and can be mounted on vehicles. Some can be placed in fixed locations in your workspace. When Would You Need a Detector?

After you have found the perfect manufacturer, you need to calculate where and when you would use your detector. Different places require different types. Each sensor is specialized in its use. You would have to do some research to find out what you are dealing with. You would need to estimate the level of exposure and the radioactive area. However, in those cases, it is essential to take care of your staff and be prepared for any unfortunate situations.

    Geiger Counter

This is a term that the majority of people will undoubtedly know. Every time radiation is mentioned, this machine will certainly be mentioned next. For those of you who do not know, the Geiger counter is thought to be the simplest radiation detector. It is also one of the oldest machines. It dates back from the twentieth century. It was developed and manufactured shortly after radioactivity was discovered.

A radiation geiger counter can detect alpha and beta particles as well as gamma rays. It is effortless to handle because it is small and you can hold in your hands. The counter is filled with gas, usually argon. When the radiation passes the gas, it registers as a count. It is a popular choice for detectors. It has a somewhat low price. So, go and contact your radiation detector manufacturer and purchase this detector if it suits you. Nevertheless, it can’t deal with measuring high radiation levels. So, it is not practical for those situations.

    Ionization Chambers

    Ionization Chambers

If you are looking for a detector which can measure high levels of gamma radiation, this is the right choice for you. These chambers are used to collect all the charge inside the gas through a process called direct ionization. It works differently from the Geiger counter. A lot of people prefer the ionization chambers because they measure X-Rays, beta particles, and gamma rays. They can handle high radiation. On the other hand, they are sensitive to moisture and are not that handy for field work.

    Scintillator

Scintillators are also very popular detectors. When they detect radiation, they emit light. They have a unique photo-multiplier tube which can convert the light and signalize if there is any radiation. It can identify specific isotopes. They are known to be very sensitive to gamma rays. Alpha and beta rays can be detected only with detectable progeny. So, it is a tricky detector to handle if you are not familiar with it. They are a bit fragile. Solid State Detectors

These types of detectors use a semiconductor material, usually silicon. They have a high resistance to electric current. They work similarly to ion chambers, but on a much smaller scale and lower voltage. Because of its small size, they have a speedy response time. Most importantly, they can endure a high amount of radiation throughout their life span. Unlike GM Tubes, they are a lot more useful in dealing with areas with a strong radiation level.
