Venture into The World of LoL

I am a 42-year old single mom who just got hooked to League of Legends recently. I am late in the game, I know, sue me, but it’s fun, and it takes my mind off my many tasks at least for a few hours. Besides, I get to relate to my kids! I now know what they mean when they say Champion, Summoner’s Rift, and many other jargons, but not everything yet. I still get confused with the terms.

I haven’t won a game at all, but I am not giving up on it, and besides, I’m not in it for the win. I am in it to be relevant to my kids and to have fun when I have nothing else to do.

    What LoL is All About

Just in case you’re one of those who don’t know what I am talking about, League of Legends, more popularly known as LoL, is a multiplayer online battle game. It’s been popular for years now, but like what I’ve said, I’ve been only on it for a few weeks.

Typically, there would be ten players split into two teams of five. They battle on what is called a Summoner’s Rift. It’s just a map-like interface. It took a while before I convinced my kids to let me join their team. They now blame me for losing so much, but I don’t care. So long as I get to control a character, which they call a Champion, then I am happy. I let my kids do all the work.

There are so many Champions in the games that I get confused. I don’t have a favourite yet, so I try whichever I find attractive, and this is confusing and annoying for my kids since they have to adjust to every character I choose since every champion has a unique ability like those characters in many old-school games.

    How You Win (or Lose)

Of course, since this is a team game, there are going to be roles for each player like the Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, and Support. Each player chooses a primary and backup role before the start of the game. If you don’t get any role, you can select the “Fill.” This is what I call the ‘all-around’ guy. It means you can play any role. I always go for the ‘Fill’ since my kids say I get to get a feel of each role if I do this and eventually, I’d be able to determine which role fits me best. Well, I listen to them since they know what’s best.

Strategizing is what I find interesting in LoL. Now I understand why my kids are so cunning. They probably got it from the games they play. Of course, teamwork is vital in LoL. It’s a good thing too since my kids learn to work with others to achieve a goal. Well, the ultimate goal in LoL is to destroy the opponent’s base. It is brutal, but, well, it’s fun, and it’s just a game.

Don’t even think for a second that this is easy. Destroying your opponent’s base would be a challenge since your enemies would be protecting it naturally. There are going to be minions that seem to spawn endlessly. If you attack too early, you could lose since you’re not strong enough. If you attack too late, you could lose since your enemy could already have gathered enough strength to tear you apart.

Thus, before you can even damage the base of your opponent, you must make sure your team is strong enough, so that means you must gather experience, gold so you can buy items or what have you’s, and explore things like on hit items in League of Legends so that you can make the most impact possible when attacking. Ultimately, your team needs the upper hand to win.

What I also find enticing in the game are the other creatures like dragons and ghosts and the skills like teleportation. These are things that I loved so much about games when I was much younger. LoL is more than just a game of strategy; it’s helping develop kids’ imagination too.

    Other Things I Like

I know that to most players, LoL is just all about winning, but honestly, I’m all about the fun. That’s why when I discovered that there’s a Mod Skin LOL Pro 2019, which allows you to change how your Champion looks like, I downloaded it. My kids say the game developer could ban me for using it, but hey, I did my research. I found out that according to Riot, the maker of LoL, they don’t mind their players using modifications since it does not harm their business at all. Nevertheless, players use it at their own risk because some update could harm the game’s function. What matters to Riot is that their players are happy, and indeed, I am happy with my cute Champions, so I guess there’s no harm using the Mod Skin.

Honestly, I’ve been judged a hundred times as being a bad mom for letting my kids play LoL and other computer games. Yes, most people see such games as bad for kids. I would not argue against them. Such games could indeed be harmful since addiction to it could eat up anyone’s time big time. However, with proper supervision, kids are actually going to learn much from this game. Perhaps this is also the reason why I decided to learn the game.

LoL is not the only game that I tried to learn because of my kids. When my eldest was much younger, I even learned games like World of Warcraft. I also explored DoTa and the exciting possibilities that mmr boosting can offer; helping you to play, learn and improve at a higher bracket. I tried to understand what it is that makes them play such game and how I can prevent them from being addictive.

Over the years, I have learned that understanding where my kids are standing makes it easier for me to monitor them, so instead of having fun in other places, I’d rather have fun playing LoL with my kids.

If you have any experience about LoL that you’d like to share, please leave a comment below.
